Margaret Ruth Short

November 10, 1948 - December 2, 2021

Margaret Ruth Short (Redmond) passed away quietly on Thursday, December 2, 2021, after a long fight with Dementia. Surrounded by her family, Peggy finally got her wings. She is survived by her 4 sons; Scott (Susan), Jeffrey, Matthew, James (Lori), her only daughter and caretaker Maggie (Justin), 14 grandkids; Terry, Katie, Wade, Chelsea, Margaret, Mary Ellen, Patrick, Samuel, Cara, Samantha, Brady, Dylan, Jessica, James, 3 great grandkids; Morgan, Connor and Maura, a brother; Jimmy (Kitty). She is preceded in heaven by her beloved John, a son; Terry, her parents; Marguerite and John, 4 sisters; Jackie, Mary, Ellen, Annie, and a brother; Johnny. Peggy will be remembered for a great many things in her life. Despite the last 3 years, it was a life well lived. Mom was our first baseball coach, teaching us to throw and catch. She was our first cheerleader, never missing a game. Our first disciplinarian, never missing an opportunity to lay into us when we were wrong. There was never a “Wait till your father gets home" moment. Our parents had the play down cold, and we feel we are better people for it. More importantly, later in life she became our first confidant and ride or die partner, even quitting her job on the same day as Matt to attend a Cubs game. Moving to Sheldon to be closer to her grand kids, she bought The Rustic Inn and became part of a small tight knit community that embraced her and provided her with a living and that living and hard work is now passed down to her daughter to continue the legacy. Peggy’s family spans across the globe and is evident every August on the streets of Mt. Greenwood during the annual Cousins Crawl where her hats have become legend and the subject of many photo ops. Her extended family of cousins goes from coast to coast and the other side of the world, all of whom know and remember our mother’s cackle of a laugh. Together with her loving John, she helped make this yearly event one of joy and laughter. I would call this a full life. Mom worked hard and partied just as hard making sure everyone was having a good time around her. To this day, I think she was the best horseshoe thrower in the family male or female. We owe a lot to you Mom and we will miss you dearly. Say hello to John, Grandma Red, our brother, Terry, and all of our favorite relatives that you now find yourself reunited with and give them a good laugh. We will always love you!
